Citrate, in the form of potassium citrate, has been used to resupply patients who have low urinary levels of citrate in an effort to limit calcium crystallization. Specifically, potassium citrate forms a soluble complex with calcium reducing the amount for binding with oxalate. Or more simply put, citrate stabilizes the urinary environment.
